Introduction

Objectives

This online modular instruction is for anyone who would like to be able to define what modular teaching is, identify the components and structure of a module and describe the (re)design process of an online module by using modular teaching…online!

Guidelines

There are many ways to navigate through these modules. You can navigate your way around the site by using any of the following:

the top navigation menu allows you to go back to the home page or to the site map.

the left-hand navigation menu lists all of the modules and the expanded menu displays the content for the module you are currently viewing.

the breadcrumbs display the path you have followed to get to the page you are currently viewing. Clicking on the linked name of a page in the breadcrumbs will return you to the main page of the current module.

the arrows located at the bottom left of your screen allow you to navigate to the previous or next page of the module. If you are on the last page of a module, the "next" arrow will direct you to the main page of the following module. The same is also true if you are on the first page of a module, the "previous" arrow will take you to the last page of the preceding module.

To complete the Learning Activities in these modules, you will need:

• to type or cut and paste your answers into the box provided and then click on the feedback button to view the suggested response or a PowerPoint slide that has been converted to a Flash presentation.
• to select check boxes

Almost all of the modules contain a Further Reflection and Application activity to transfer what you are learning in the module to your own teaching and learning situation.

Modular Teaching: What is it?

Modular Teaching is a teaching method that is learner-centred. It is a self-contained unit consisting of:

  • clearly stated objectives;
  • a sequence of active learning strategies that incorporate a wide selection of media to actively engage the learner;
  • immediate feedback;
  • a post-test which measures whether or not the objectives have been satisfactorily mastered based on a pre-specified criterion or level of performance.

The advantages to using modular teaching are:

  • It respects the learning pace of each student.
  • It allows verification of whether the objectives have been met by providing frequent formative evaluations.
  • It allows the material to be reused from one semester to another or from year to year.

Online modules have the added benefit that students can interact with the instructor, other students or experts from anywhere in the world.

The limitations of modular teaching include:

  • It is costly and time consuming to produce.
  • It risks being limited and thus not as rich in practice as it is in theory.
