This module looks at how to determine the learner characteristics
and the entry behaviour – or prerequistites –
of your target audience. These are important factors
to take into consideration at this stage of the design
since they can affect the student’s learning and,
as a result, also affect the teaching materials and
activities you select in the next stage of the design.
For instance, if your students already have years of
experience in the subject you are teaching, you might
choose activities that enable participants to collaborate
and, by sharing their expertise, engage in peer teaching.
The strategies proposed here can be used in the design
of any teaching and learning situation not just in the
design of modular instruction.
